The concept of pre-schools was started by Samuel Wilderspin in 1848 but the oldest known concept is of a gurukul, which was the ancient Hindu teaching system. The concept of pre-school was borrowed from it and coined differently. Nursery schools gained popularity in late 1800s and since has become an important part of the education system.
